SUMP PUMPS

Frequently Asked Questions

There are a few different kind of sump pumps, including: basement, battery-operated, and sewage ejector pumps.
Each type serves a specific purpose, which we will explore in detail below:

Basement Sump Pump

If you own a basement, you likely have a basement sump pump. These pumps help prevent floods by pumping water from your basement to your drain lines. As a result, they save people money in flood damage, making them worth their cost and maintenance.

A float switch controls your basement sump pump. Float switches activate at a predetermined amount of liquid, which means your pump only turns on when a certain level of water surrounds it. Troubleshooting problems with your basement sump pump can be challenging due to the nature of float switches.

Typically, you must introduce a large amount of water to your pump or wait for a flood to determine if it functions as intended. Since it’s tricky to predict basement pump failure, our plumbers recommend you get your pump inspected annually and install a battery-operated sump as a backup.

Battery-Operated Sump Pump

As mentioned above, we recommend you install a battery-operated sump pump to act as a backup should your main ever fail during a flood. The primary difference between a battery-operated and conventional sump pump is that the backup gets power from a battery.

Since most sump pumps get power from your home’s primary power source, they don’t work during an outage. And since floods often cause power outages, you won’t have access to a functioning sump pump. We recommend installing a battery-operated sump pump in Denver as a preventative measure.

Sewage Ejector Pump

A sewage ejector pump removes wastewater from below-ground areas, such as a basement that uses a water supply. Typically, you only need this sump pump if you have to move sewage below the main sewer line on your property.
For example, you’ll need a sewage ejector pump to send waste from a basement toilet to the main sewage line.

Did you know that there are several different kinds of sump pumps available in the area?

Some of the most common types of sump pumps our plumbers work on around town:

  • Basement sump pumps
  • Battery operated sump pumps
  • Sewage ejector pumps

Each type of sump pump has a specific purpose. What are those purposes, you ask? Well, let’s explore each type of pump in detail below:

Basement Sump Pump

A basement sump pump is, well, a sump pump located in your basement. They remove excess water from the lowest level of your property (typically the basement, hence their name) and are great at preventing flood damage. Usually, you can’t directly control your basement sump pump. Instead, they’re controlled by what’s called a float switch. Float switches activate when faced with a predetermined amount of liquid (which makes them float switches). In other words, your sump pump only turns on when there is a certain level of water around it.

Unfortunately, due to the nature of float switches, troubleshooting problems with basement sump pumps is often tricky. Typically, you have to either introduce a large amount of water to the pump or wait for a flood to determine your  basement sump pump functions as intended. Since it’s so challenging to predict basement pump failure, our plumbers recommend you both get your pump inspected annually as well as install a battery-operated sump to act as a backup in the event your primary pump fails.

Battery Operated Sump Pump

As mentioned above, our plumbers recommend you install a battery-operated sump pump to act as a backup pump should your main ever fail during a flood. Also, as you’ve probably already figured out, the primary difference between a battery-operated sump and a conventional pump is that the battery backup pump gets power from, well, a battery.

Furthermore, since most sump pumps get power directly from your home’s primary power source, they don’t work during a power outage. Unfortunately, floods often bring power problems with them. So, even if you have a brand new pump that’s never failed an inspection, we still recommend you install a battery-operated sump pump in Aurora. After all, it never hurts to be prepared.

Sewage Ejector Pump

You only need a sewage ejector pump if you need to move sewage from somewhere below the main sewer line on your property. For example, if you have a basement toilet, you likely need an Aurora sewage ejector pump to move the waste from the toilet to the main sewer line on your property.

If your sump pump stops working, check to see if the unit is plugged in and the circuit breaker hasn’t tripped. Also, inspect the float switch to ensure it’s not stuck or obstructed. If these quick fixes don’t solve the problem, it’s essential to call Done Plumbing for professional repair services. We can diagnose and fix issues ranging from motor failures to clogged discharge lines, ensuring your sump pump is ready to protect your home from water damage efficiently.

Sump pump maintenance is essential for ensuring the system operates efficiently when you need it most. Maintenance tasks include cleaning the sump pit, checking the pump and float switch for proper operation, testing the pump by pouring water into the pit, inspecting the discharge line to ensure it’s free of blockages, and replacing the backup battery if your unit has one. Done Plumbing offers comprehensive maintenance services to keep your sump pump in top condition, helping to prevent failures during critical times such as heavy rains or melting snow.

Installing a sump pump offers several key benefits, including protecting your home’s foundation and basement from water damage, preventing the growth of mold and mildew by keeping your basement dry, and potentially lowering your insurance rates by reducing the risk of flood damage. Moreover, a sump pump can increase your property’s value by ensuring the structural integrity of your home and making it more appealing to prospective buyers who want a flood-resistant property.

  • Avoid Flood Damage – Along with preventing a gradual build-up of water in the basement, a working sump pump averts the disaster of large-scale flooding and consequent damage.
  • Combats Mold and Mildew – Continual dampness encourages mold and mildew growth, which is problematic for building materials and health.
  • Reduce Fire Risk – Flooding is a cause of electrical fires due to short-circuiting of appliances in the basement.
  • Property Value – Demonstrating structural integrity, a sump pump adds value to the home.

You might need a sump pump if your basement is prone to flooding, you live in a flat or low-lying area that collects water easily, or if your region experiences heavy rain or snow. The presence of water or dampness in your basement regularly is a clear indicator that a sump pump could benefit your home. Sump pumps are designed to automatically pump out excess water, protecting your home from water damage, mold, and mildew growth.
