5 Ways to Save Water and Money

Clear water and oil dripping from pipes in a wall

Water conservation is important in Colorado. The arid landscape here can render water scarce at times. This past winter, we had the good fortune of quite a lot of water, but even in times of plenty, it is good to save.

When we all do our part, it can really impact the overall quality of our water.

1) Fix Your Drips

Make sure none of your faucets drip. If they do drip a little, fix it. Every small drip adds up, and can save you hundreds of gallons over time.

2) Take Shorter Showers

This suggestion may not be the most popular, but it is much more so than not taking a shower at all. Shorter showers can drastically reduce your water consumption. The environmental protection agency estimates that of all indoor water usage, showers account for nearly 40%. Keeping your showers under 5 minutes can result in a significant decrease in your water bill.

3) Water Your Lawn at Night

Watering during the heat of the day increases evaporation, and consequently uses more water. If you have an automated sprinkler system, simply set the timer appropriately. If not, simply water in the morning, or once the sun goes down.

4) Make Sure Your Toilets are Not Leaking

A leaking toilet can be silent, so make sure to regularly check that the flapper fully closes. If it is not, replace it ($3).

5) Install a Water Saving Shower Head

Water saving shower heads are inexpensive, but they can save drastic amounts of water each month. Many older shower heads use over 5 gallons of water per minute, and new water conserving shower heads drop that mark to under 2 gallons per minute. With EPA estimates of shower water usage averaging close to 40 gallons per day, that quickly adds up to substantial water savings.

Taking the time to check these few common places for water loss can help you save hundreds of gallons, if not thousands of gallons, and substantial costs on your water bill. If you find that you have a leak, but do not know how to fix it, give us a call and we will help you find the best solution.
