Water heaters in residential units will be more energy efficient in 2015. An energy regulation called “NAECA III” (pronounced nay-kuh) will go into effect on April 16, 2015. This regulation is designed to make home appliances more energy efficient. Residential (not commercial) water heaters will be impacted by the new regulation—some types more than others.
All of these new changes next year are for a good cause— to help us all to save energy across America in our homes from the use of our water heaters. But there are some things that you should know.
What does this mean for you?
In general, we expect these new standards to increase the cost of both manufacturing and installation. These standards affect the manufacturing of new water heaters, but you should also be aware that the water heaters we have in stock can be sold until we are out of stock.
Of the two main types to choose from, tank or tankless water heaters, where tankless water heaters are largely efficient enough to already meet and exceed the new standards. They can cost a little more to install (depending on your existing system), but will save you approximately 30% on your energy bills and in some cases even more. Those savings add up as you only pay for the water that you and your family uses since the units do not continuously heat the stored water.
Tank water heaters are still the most popular, though, especially in Denver. Many of the homes here already have the right connections which makes installation quicker, easier, and more cost effective initially. But as these new standards come into effect, replacing your older water heater may pose some issues as the new heaters will be slightly larger. So, if your current heater is located in a tight space, it may be time to consider a tankless water heater.
Additional Information
- The new water heaters are expected to be 3+ inches taller and 3+ inches wider. This could have implications for water heaters being installed in confined spaces (ex: closets)
- The cost of water heaters is expected to go up as it will be more expensive for manufactures to make the water heater (more materials), more expensive to transport (heavier and bigger boxes), and more expensive to install (more time may be needed, and even a 2nd technician in some cases).
- The capacity of water heaters (40 gal, 50 gal, 75 gal, etc.) will not really change, but they are more efficient so they will save energy.
- Any water heaters already manufactured before April 16th can still be installed past this date. We have increased our inventory of these water heaters to help ease the transition.
