For most homeowners, drain cleaning is something that only comes up when there is a problem. But from what we see in homes around here, waiting until a full clog happens usually means there has been buildup forming for a while.
A good rule of thumb is to have your drains professionally cleaned every one to two years. That is typically enough to clear out grease, soap residue, hair, and mineral buildup before it turns into a blockage. In homes with larger families, frequent cooking, or older plumbing, we often recommend doing it closer to once a year.
In this area, mineral content in the water can slowly coat the inside of pipes over time. It is not something you notice right away, but it can restrict flow and make clogs more likely. Regular cleaning helps keep things moving the way they should.
If you are already noticing slow drains, gurgling sounds, or recurring clogs in the same fixtures, it is a sign your system could benefit from more frequent attention. At that point, it is less about maintenance and more about preventing a bigger backup.
What we usually tell homeowners is this, if you cannot remember the last time your drains were cleaned, it is probably time. Staying ahead of it is a lot easier and less stressful than dealing with an emergency when everything stops draining at once.
