Slow drains. We all hate them. While you’re brushing your teeth, they remind you not to keep the water running. When you’re in the shower, the water rises up over your ankles. There are always a few common reasons for them from household to household – hair, food, and debris seem to be the most common reasons that your water sometimes takes an hour to flow out.

Here are a few things you can try to use for the slow drains in your home.

The Zip-It for Slow Drains

These little tools are found in many bathrooms belonging to folks with long, breakable hair! The Zip-It is normally used for the sink, but there are times when they may even be effective in your tub. They won’t take care of a major issue of a slow drain, but used on a regular basis they can be effective. They are very easy to use, and can be found at just about any department store. All you do is slide it down the drain (wriggling it a little), twist it, turn it, and pull out from the drain all the hair and debris that was clogging the line.

Take Out the Pop-Up

The pop-up in your sink is one of the other main causes for a slow drain. It catches almost everything, and could very well be the culprit! This takes a little work, but it is so worth it. All it takes is to find the nut that holds it in place. It’s right there under the sink, behind the drain. Take your time here; scraping that nut with the wrong sized wrench can make this job a very long one! Carefully find the tool with the right fit, slide it on, and proceed to twist off the nut. The pop-up will come right out. You can clean it, put it back in, and enjoy a clean flowing drain.

Use a Plunger

If it’s your tub that’s stopped up, it may be okay to use the huge plunger that you may use for the toilet sometimes. But, if it’s your much smaller bathroom sink that’s draining slowly, you’ll want to buy a smaller one. These mini-plungers are in the same section of the department store as the big ones, and can be very effective when used regularly.
