The distinction between repair and replacement comes down to how extensive the damage is and what condition the rest of the pipe is in. A single cracked joint or a localized root intrusion in an otherwise sound pipe is a repair. A pipe that’s collapsed over multiple feet, made of materials that have reached the end of their service life, or failing at multiple points along its run is a replacement. The only reliable way to know which situation you’re in is a sewer camera inspection — symptoms alone can’t answer that question.

Signs the Problem Needs Professional Evaluation

Before getting into repair vs. replace, recognize the symptoms that mean you need a professional assessment, not just drain cleaning:

  • Backups that return within weeks of being cleared — recurrence suggests the underlying pipe condition wasn’t addressed
  • Multiple fixtures draining slowly or backing up simultaneously — main line is involved, not just an individual drain
  • Sewage odor inside the home not explained by a dry P-trap
  • A soggy, sunken, or unusually lush area of the yard above the sewer lateral path
  • Unexplained foundation cracks or settlement near the sewer line (soil washout from a leaking pipe can undermine foundations)

What the Camera Inspection Reveals

A sewer camera inspection records the interior condition of your pipe in real time. Done’s technicians look for: root intrusion (and how severe), grease or scale buildup, cracks in the pipe wall, joint offsets (where pipe sections have shifted apart), bellies or sags (low spots that hold standing water), and the pipe’s material — which tells a lot about its remaining lifespan and repair options.

In the Denver metro and Front Range, clay tile and Orangeburg pipe are still common in homes built before the mid-1970s. Clay tile can last 50–100 years in stable conditions, but Colorado’s expansive clay soils and seasonal freeze-thaw cycles create anything but stable conditions. Orangeburg — a compressed paper-and-tar product — was phased out by the 1970s because it degrades badly over time; if your home still has Orangeburg, replacement is almost always the right answer regardless of current symptoms.

When Repair Is the Right Call

Targeted repair makes sense when the pipe is structurally sound overall but has a specific, localized problem — a cracked joint, a short section of root intrusion, or a small section of deteriorated pipe. Trenchless pipe lining (CIPP) is ideal in these situations: a resin-saturated liner is inserted into the existing pipe and cured in place, creating a smooth new inner surface without excavation. The surrounding pipe, even if old clay or cast iron, serves as a form for the new liner. Lining is cost-effective when the damage is concentrated and the rest of the pipe is intact.

When Replacement Is the Better Investment

Replacement becomes the better choice when the pipe is failing at multiple points, when it’s a material (like Orangeburg) that can’t be reliably lined, when the pipe has collapsed significantly, or when repeated repairs have been needed in a short period. Full replacement — whether by open-cut excavation or trenchless pipe bursting — installs new pipe for the full run and eliminates the patchwork of targeted repairs that can add up to more cost over time.

Pipe bursting is the trenchless replacement method: a bursting head is pulled through the old pipe, fracturing it outward while simultaneously pulling new HDPE pipe into place behind it. It’s faster and less disruptive than full excavation for most residential sewer laterals, and the new HDPE pipe has a much longer expected service life than the materials it replaces.
