Supply-only ventilation works in reverse: a fan brings outdoor air in, usually through the HVAC return, and air escapes through gaps. Balanced ventilation systems — including Heat Recovery Ventilators (HRVs) and Energy Recovery Ventilators (ERVs) — bring in fresh air and exhaust stale air simultaneously. The key advantage: they capture heat (HRV) or both heat and moisture (ERV) from the outgoing air and transfer it to the incoming air, so you’re not heating or cooling fresh air from scratch. In Colorado’s cold winters and very dry climate, an ERV is particularly valuable for maintaining comfortable indoor humidity while still ventilating effectively.

How Your HVAC System Ties Into Ventilation

Most Denver-area homes rely on their central forced-air system to circulate and filter indoor air, but circulation is not the same as ventilation.
