For most Denver-area homes on municipal water, testing your home’s water quality once every one to two years gives you a useful baseline and catches any changes in your plumbing or local supply. If you have a well, the recommendation is at minimum once a year, and more frequently if there’s any known contamination risk nearby. Municipal water utilities publish annual water quality reports, but those numbers reflect water leaving the treatment plant — what comes out of your tap depends on the condition of the distribution pipes and your own household plumbing.
Why Colorado Tap Water Merits Attention Even on City Supply
Denver’s municipal water starts as snowmelt from the Rocky Mountains — some of the cleanest source water in the country. But water chemistry changes as it travels through aging infrastructure and your home’s pipes. Front Range communities deal with several specific water quality concerns worth monitoring:
- Hardness: Most Denver-area water is classified as hard to very hard (15–25+ grains per gallon in many suburbs). Hardness isn’t a health risk, but it affects every water-using appliance and fixture in your home — water heaters, dishwashers, coffee makers, faucet aerators, and showerheads all accumulate mineral scale. Knowing your hardness level helps you decide whether a softener or conditioner makes sense.
- Lead: Older Denver homes built before 1986 may have lead solder in the household plumbing, and some even older properties have lead service lines. Lead doesn’t come from the water source — it leaches into water that sits in lead-containing pipes. The only way to know your lead level is to test water from your tap.
- Chlorine and chloramines: Denver Water uses chloramines (a chlorine-ammonia compound) for disinfection. Most people don’t notice it, but some are sensitive to the taste and odor, and chloramines affect fish in aquariums and can impact some medical equipment.
- Wildfire smoke season impact: Colorado’s wildfire season can temporarily affect surface water quality. While treatment plants adjust for this, it’s a valid reason to run a test if you’re near an affected watershed area.
What to Test For
A basic water quality test for a Denver-area home on city water should include hardness, pH, chlorine or chloramines, and lead. If you have older galvanized steel pipes (common in homes built before the 1960s), add iron and manganese to the panel — galvanized pipes corrode from the inside over time and can release those metals into the water along with a rust-colored tint.
For well water, a more comprehensive panel is appropriate: coliform bacteria and E. coli (annually at minimum), nitrates and nitrites (particularly if you’re in an agricultural area or near livestock), hardness, pH, iron, manganese, and arsenic (naturally occurring in some Colorado geology). If you’re pregnant, have infants in the home, or have household members with compromised immune systems, err on the side of more frequent bacterial testing.
When to Test More Frequently
Test immediately — don’t wait for your regular schedule — if you notice any of the following: a sudden change in water taste, odor, or color; your water heater is producing discolored or foul-smelling water; a recent plumbing repair or pipe replacement; a nearby construction project or known chemical spill; or a utility notice about a water main break in your neighborhood. After any of these events, a targeted test gives you confidence that what’s coming out of your tap is what it should be.
What to Do With the Results
Test results are only useful if you act on them. High hardness warrants a conversation about water softening or conditioning. Detected lead means investigating which pipes are the source and considering a point-of-use filter certified for lead removal while a longer-term fix is planned. Bacteria in well water requires disinfection and a follow-up test to confirm the issue is resolved.
