Changing a circuit breaker is a task that should be done by a licensed electrician in most cases — not because the mechanical steps are particularly complex, but because the work requires opening a live electrical panel where dangerous voltages are always present, even with the main breaker off. The bus bars that carry power from your utility feed remain energized regardless of your main breaker position. Contact with them can be fatal. Why “Turning Off the Main” Doesn’t Make It Safe
This is the most important thing to understand before anyone touches a panel. Your main breaker disconnects the branch circuits in your home from the utility supply, but it does not de-energize the wires coming in from the meter. Those wires — typically two 120-volt hot conductors — connect directly to the main lugs or the main breaker input, and they remain live at all times. Only the utility company can disconnect power upstream of those conductors, typically by pulling the meter. For most homeowners, this distinction means that working inside the panel is not something to approach with standard electrical DIY confidence — the risk profile is different from wiring an outlet.
What a Licensed Electrician Does When Replacing a Breaker

- The panel cover is removed carefully, with attention to the live bus bars.

- The breaker is snapped off the bus bar and replaced with an exact match — same amperage, same brand (panels are not universally interchangeable; using a breaker not rated for your panel can void the panel’s listing and create safety issues).
- The wire is reconnected, the panel is inspected for any other concerns, and the cover is replaced.
When a Breaker Problem Is Not Actually the Breaker
A breaker that trips repeatedly is usually trying to tell you something about the circuit it protects, not about itself. Breakers trip when the current flowing through them exceeds their rated capacity, when they detect a ground fault (in the case of GFCI breakers), or when they detect arcing (in the case of AFCI breakers). Simply replacing a tripping breaker with a new one — or worse, with a higher-amperage breaker — does not fix the underlying problem and can create a genuine fire hazard by allowing a circuit to carry more current than its wiring is rated for. The correct approach is to identify why the circuit is overloading or faulting before deciding that breaker replacement is the right fix.
Signs That Your Breaker Needs Attention
There are legitimate situations where a breaker itself fails and replacement is the right call — not because it is tripping appropriately, but because it is failing to do its job. A breaker that will not reset and hold, one that feels unusually hot compared to others in the panel, one that shows scorch marks or smells burnt, or one that does not trip even under clear overload is a failed component. Certain breaker brands also have documented reliability issues — Federal Pacific Stab-Lok panels and some older Zinsco equipment had breakers known to fail to trip under overload, a serious safety concern that warrants professional evaluation.
The Case for a Full Panel Evaluation
If a breaker is failing, it is worth having an electrician look at the whole panel while they are there. A single failing breaker can be a sign of a panel that has reached the end of its reliable service life, or of a broader wiring issue that should be addressed. In Denver-area homes built in the 1960s through 1980s, panels may be approaching 40 to 50 years of age — a reasonable time for a professional assessment of the whole system. An electrician can also note whether your panel has room for future circuits, whether AFCI and GFCI protection meets current standards, and whether the service amperage is adequate for your home’s load.
