Kitchen remodels almost always require electrical upgrades — the National Electrical Code mandates specific circuit configurations for kitchens, and older homes rarely meet current requirements. At minimum, you’ll need dedicated circuits for the refrigerator, dishwasher, and garbage disposal, plus at least two 20-amp small-appliance circuits for countertop receptacles. Add in a new range, microwave, or under-counter appliances and the electrical scope grows quickly. Planning the electrical work alongside your cabinet and appliance layout — before walls close — saves significant time and expense.

Required Circuits Under Current Electrical Code

The NEC as adopted in Colorado requires specific minimum circuit configurations in kitchens. Understanding these helps you know what’s mandatory versus what’s an upgrade:

  • Small-appliance circuits — at least two 20-amp, 120-volt circuits dedicated solely to countertop receptacles. These feed the toasters, coffee makers, mixers, and other plug-in appliances that run simultaneously during morning routines.
  • Refrigerator circuit — a dedicated 15- or 20-amp circuit. The refrigerator runs continuously and should not share a circuit with anything else.
  • Dishwasher circuit — a dedicated 15- or 20-amp circuit; some dishwashers are hardwired, others use a receptacle under the sink.
  • Garbage disposal circuit — a dedicated 15- or 20-amp circuit, typically switched from a wall outlet near the sink.
  • Range or cooktop — electric ranges require a dedicated 240-volt, 50-amp circuit; electric cooktops may vary. Gas ranges with electric ignition typically need a standard 120-volt outlet nearby.
  • Microwave — built-in or over-range microwaves should have a dedicated 20-amp circuit; a shared circuit risks tripping during high-draw cooking cycles.

GFCI Protection: Where It’s Required

All receptacles within six feet of a kitchen sink must be GFCI-protected under current code. This applies to countertop outlets along walls adjacent to or facing the sink. GFCI protection can be provided at the outlet itself (GFCI receptacle) or at the first outlet in a circuit served by a GFCI breaker at the panel. During a remodel, your electrician will often upgrade the entire kitchen to GFCI-protected circuits to meet current standards — especially important if the home was built before 1978 when GFCI requirements in kitchens first appeared.

Lighting Circuit Upgrades

Kitchen lighting is frequently overlooked during electrical planning but makes a significant difference in how the finished space functions. A remodel is the right time to add recessed LED fixtures on a dimmer, under-cabinet lighting for task illumination, and pendant lighting over an island — each on its own circuit or at least its own switched leg. Panel Capacity and Service Upgrade

A kitchen remodel that adds an electric range, a second oven, or a warming drawer may push a 100-amp service panel to its limits. Your electrician will perform a load calculation to determine whether your existing service can accommodate the new kitchen loads alongside everything else in the home. Homes in older Denver neighborhoods — Washington Park, Capitol Hill, Highlands, Baker — often have panels that were adequate for the 1950s kitchen but not the modern one. Addressing this as part of the remodel is far less disruptive than returning to the project later.

Permit and Inspection Requirements

Any new circuit installation, panel work, or significant wiring changes in a kitchen remodel require an electrical permit from your local building department. In Denver, this means a permit through Denver Community Planning and Development, with inspections at rough-in and final.
