The water level in your toilet tank should sit about one inch below the top of the overflow tube — the tall vertical tube in the center of the tank that prevents overflow if the fill valve doesn’t shut off. Most manufacturers mark a water line on the inside of the tank; if yours does, follow that mark. If the water is too low, the toilet won’t flush with enough force to clear the bowl. If it’s too high, water spills into the overflow tube and drains continuously, wasting water and driving up your bill. Getting this level right is a quick fix that makes a noticeable difference in flush performance.

How to Check the Current Level

Remove the tank lid and set it somewhere safe — porcelain lids are heavy and break easily. With the tank at rest (not mid-fill), look at the water surface relative to the overflow tube. If the water is level with or above the tube’s opening, water is constantly trickling into the bowl — you’ll often hear this as a faint running sound after the tank is supposed to be full. If the water level sits more than an inch or so below the tube, the flush may be weak and incomplete, requiring a double flush.

How to Adjust the Water Level

The adjustment method depends on what type of fill valve your toilet has. Older toilets have a ball float — a rubber or plastic ball on the end of a metal arm connected to the fill valve. To raise the level, bend the arm slightly upward or adjust the screw at the pivot point. To lower it, do the reverse. Newer toilets use a float cup that rides up and down on the fill valve body. There’s typically a clip, screw, or pinch-and-slide mechanism on the side of the float cup. Turning the adjustment screw clockwise raises the float (and thus the water level); counterclockwise lowers it.

After any adjustment, flush the toilet and let the tank refill. Check the final water level and adjust again if needed. The process usually takes two or three iterations to dial in precisely.

What Causes the Level to Be Off in the First Place

In a new toilet or after a recent repair, the fill valve adjustment may simply not have been set correctly. In older toilets, the fill valve itself can wear out and fail to shut off reliably, causing the tank to overfill and constantly drain through the overflow tube. The float may also become waterlogged (on older ball-float designs) and not rise fully, causing it to signal the valve to keep filling. Colorado’s hard water can also deposit scale on fill valve components, causing them to stick or behave erratically.

  • A constantly running toilet can waste several hundred gallons of water per day — fixing the water level or replacing the fill valve is well worth the effort
  • To test for a slow leak into the bowl, put a few drops of food coloring in the tank and wait 10 minutes without flushing — color in the bowl confirms the flapper is leaking
  • If the fill valve is old, noisy, or slow to fill, replacing the entire fill valve (a $10–20 part) is often the best fix rather than adjusting the old one
  • Make sure the flapper chain has just enough slack — too tight keeps the flapper from sealing; too loose can get caught under it

When Adjusting the Level Doesn’t Fix the Problem

If you’ve adjusted the fill valve and the water level still won’t hold, or if the toilet is running continuously despite a proper level, the issue is likely a worn flapper that isn’t sealing, a failing fill valve, or — less commonly — a crack in the overflow tube. Flappers and fill valves are inexpensive parts that most homeowners can replace in 30–60 minutes.
