An outdoor electrical circuit can power a wide range of equipment and amenities — from landscape lighting and security cameras to hot tubs, outdoor kitchens, EV chargers, and detached garages or workshops. The key is matching the circuit type (voltage, amperage, GFCI protection) to whatever you plan to run on it, and having the work done by a licensed electrician who pulls a permit.

Outdoor circuits serve two broad categories: low-demand loads like lighting and small appliances, and high-demand loads like hot tubs, EV chargers, and HVAC equipment. Understanding which category your project falls into determines what kind of circuit you need.

GFCI Protection Is Required Outdoors

Voltage and Amperage: Matching the Circuit to the Load

Most outdoor receptacles for general use run on standard 120V/20A circuits — enough for power tools, lighting, and small appliances. Higher-demand equipment requires 240V service. A hot tub typically needs a 240V/50A dedicated circuit with a 4-wire connection and a lockable disconnect within sight of the tub. An EV charger running at 32 amps of continuous charging draws 40 amps of circuit capacity (the NEC requires circuits to be sized at 125% of continuous loads), so a 40A or 50A dedicated circuit is standard.

Running 240V to an outbuilding, deck, or back yard often means trenching conduit through your yard. In Colorado’s clay and expansive soils, this requires careful planning — both for depth (frost line runs deep on the Front Range) and for coordinating with utility locates before any digging begins.

Panel Capacity Comes First

Before any outdoor circuit gets added, a licensed electrician will assess your main panel to make sure there’s capacity for the new load. Older homes in the Denver metro often have 100-amp service panels — enough for the home as originally built, but tight when you’re adding a hot tub, an EV charger, and outdoor kitchen circuits at the same time. Permits and Inspections

Adding or extending outdoor circuits is permitted electrical work in Colorado. Your electrician pulls the permit, does the work, and schedules an inspection by the local jurisdiction. This isn’t bureaucratic overhead — the inspection verifies that wiring is properly buried, connections are sound, and GFCI protection is in place.
