A water supply line is the pipe or flexible tubing that carries pressurized fresh water from your home’s main plumbing system to an individual fixture — a toilet, faucet, refrigerator ice maker, washing machine, or dishwasher. Supply lines are the final short connection between the shutoff valve under a sink or behind a toilet and the fixture itself. They’re small, often overlooked, and absolutely critical: a failed supply line can release water at full home pressure into a cabinet, wall, or floor, causing severe water damage in a matter of minutes.
Types of Water Supply Lines
Supply lines come in several materials, each with different durability characteristics and typical lifespans:
- Braided stainless steel — the most common and recommended type for residential use today. A flexible rubber or polymer inner tube is wrapped in woven stainless steel for burst resistance. Well-made stainless braided lines last 8–10 years or more, though the inner tube can degrade with age and hard water.
- Polymer (plastic) supply lines — less expensive and widely used, but more prone to cracking and UV degradation. Not recommended in applications with heat exposure (near a water heater) or where the line may be kinked.
- Copper supply tubes — rigid or semi-rigid; very durable and common in older homes. Require more care during installation to avoid kinking, but copper’s resistance to corrosion makes it a long-lasting material.
- PEX (cross-linked polyethylene) — increasingly common in new construction and remodels; flexible, freeze-resistant, and compatible with hard water. Often used for longer runs behind walls, though also available in short supply-line format.
Why Supply Lines Fail and How to Spot the Warning Signs
Supply line failures are one of the leading causes of residential water damage claims. The inner tube of a braided stainless line can crack or delaminate with age, temperature cycling, or water quality issues — including the high mineral content of Colorado’s hard water, which accelerates degradation at fittings and connection points. Plastic lines become brittle over time, especially in spaces that get warm in summer (under sinks on exterior walls, near a water heater).
Warning signs to watch for include: any visible moisture, discoloration, or mineral deposits around the connection points; swelling or bulging of the line itself (especially on braided lines, which can balloon before failing); corrosion on the fittings at either end; or a line that’s clearly kinked at an angle from improper installation. If a supply line is more than ten years old, replacing it proactively is a low-cost way to avoid a high-cost water damage event.

A standard home water supply is pressurized to 40–80 PSI. At 60 PSI, a fully failed half-inch supply line can release 100 or more gallons of water in just a few minutes. If the failure happens while you’re at work or overnight, several hundred gallons can soak into cabinetry, subfloor, and walls before it’s discovered. In Colorado’s dry climate, that moisture can still trigger mold growth within 24–48 hours — especially in the dark, enclosed space under a sink. The insurance claim cost for a supply line failure typically far exceeds the $10–$30 cost of the line itself.
Maintenance and Replacement Recommendations
Inspect supply lines visually at least once a year — get a flashlight under the sink, behind the toilet, and behind the washing machine. Look at the connection point at both ends: the shutoff valve fitting and the fixture connection. Feel the line for stiffness, cracking, or any swelling. Replace any line that shows age-related degradation, is kinked, or is more than a decade old regardless of appearance. When replacing a faucet, toilet, or appliance, always replace the supply line at the same time — it’s a negligible add-on cost at that point.
