An air handler is the indoor portion of a split heating and cooling system. It’s a metal cabinet containing a blower motor, an evaporator coil, an air filter, and — in electric or heat pump systems — resistance heating elements. The air handler’s job is to move air: it draws return air from the home through the filter, conditions it by passing it over the evaporator coil, and then the blower pushes it through supply ducts to every room. The actual heating or cooling energy comes from either a connected furnace, heat pump, or outdoor AC unit — the air handler is what distributes and delivers that conditioned air.

What Sets an Air Handler Apart from Other HVAC Components

Homeowners sometimes use “air handler,” “furnace,” and “HVAC unit” interchangeably, but they describe different equipment. A furnace burns gas (or uses electric resistance heat) to generate warmth and has its own built-in blower. An air handler does not generate heat by combustion — it either receives heat energy via refrigerant from a heat pump or applies electric resistance strip heat. The outdoor unit (condenser or heat pump) handles heat exchange with the outside air; the air handler handles distribution inside. The evaporator coil inside the air handler is where heat exchange happens. In cooling mode, refrigerant flowing through the coil is very cold; warm indoor air passes over it, gives up its heat to the refrigerant, and exits cooler. That heat is then carried by the refrigerant to the outdoor condenser unit, where it’s released outside. In heat pump heating mode, the refrigerant arrives warm (having absorbed heat from outdoor air) and releases it into the indoor airstream. The coil is also where moisture condenses out of humid air during cooling — which is why air handlers have a drain pan and drain line below the coil.
