Adding new lighting to a room involves more than picking a fixture you like. You need to think about the room’s purpose and task areas, the existing circuit capacity, the type of light source and color temperature, placement and beam angles, and whether the installation requires a new circuit or just a switched outlet. Getting these decisions right up front means you won’t be pulling fixtures back out to fix layering problems or insufficient light levels.
Define the Lighting Layers You Need
Good room lighting typically works in three layers: ambient (general illumination), task (focused light where you work or read), and accent (highlighting features or artwork). A kitchen that relies on a single overhead fixture will always feel dim over the countertops regardless of bulb wattage, because the body of the person working at the counter blocks the light. Recessed downlights over the counter, under-cabinet LED strips, and a pendant over the island serve different purposes and together create a functional, flexible kitchen.
In Denver’s dry climate with its intense natural light, rooms with large windows on the south and west often need lighting that complements natural light at different times of day — brighter and cooler for morning, warmer and dimmer for evening.
Circuit Capacity and Panel Load

Modern LED fixtures draw very little current, so in most cases an existing 15-amp lighting circuit has more than enough capacity. LED bulbs and fixtures are measured in Kelvin (K) for color temperature and CRI (Color Rendering Index) for how accurately they show colors. General guidelines:
- 2700K–3000K (warm white): Living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms — creates a relaxed, incandescent-like feel
- 3500K–4000K (neutral white): Kitchens, bathrooms, home offices — crisp and clear without feeling clinical
- 5000K+ (daylight): Garages, workshops, utility areas — high visibility, energizing
- CRI 90+: Recommended for any room where paint colors, fabrics, or food preparation matter — lower CRI makes colors look flat
Dimmer Compatibility
If you want dimmable lighting — and in most living spaces you do — the fixture, bulb, and dimmer switch must all be compatible. Not all LED bulbs dim smoothly on all dimmers, and some combinations cause flickering or buzzing. Done’s electricians specify compatible combinations and install proper LED-rated dimmers. Recessed vs. Surface vs. Pendant: Choosing the Right Fixture Type
Recessed lights (can lights or wafer lights) provide clean, unobtrusive illumination but require attic access or a deep enough ceiling cavity. Surface-mounted fixtures and flush mounts work in rooms with limited ceiling depth. Pendants over islands, dining tables, and bathroom vanities serve both task and decorative roles. Track lighting gives flexibility for accent lighting in rooms where you want to redirect light over time.
One practical note for Colorado homes: rooms that share a ceiling with an attic need IC-rated (insulation-contact rated) recessed fixtures and proper air sealing to prevent heat loss — significant in a climate where heating bills are real.
Code Requirements to Know
Bathroom and wet-area fixtures must be rated for damp or wet locations. Fixtures within a certain distance of the shower or tub require wet-location ratings per NEC. Recessed lights in insulated ceilings require IC ratings. And in most Colorado jurisdictions, adding new lighting circuits — as opposed to replacing an existing fixture — requires a permit.
